Apple Computers…

has more cash on hand than the US Government. This would be, of course, because Apple doesn’t, like many businesses and households, spend more than it takes in. Beneath the radar on all the discussions and posturing regarding the US debt there is a higher, moral, question. First, the money that our government has is not “their” money, it is the people’s money extracted from them through taxes. Those who lead have a moral responsibility to be good stewards of this money, investing it judiciously for the greater good. The failure to do this is a moral failure, an abandonment of values easily more significant than much of what is considered “scandal” in Washington D.C..

Secondly, we are a culture soaked in the expectation that we deserve things without accounting for the cost. Everyone has their hand out to the government to give them something and who cares who is going to pay for it as long as we believe its someone else. If it is scandalous for those in positions of authority to squander money given to them in trust it is equally scandalous to be a nation of people who demand without sacrifice, who, as St. Paul indicates, would like to eat without working.

That’s the problem with all of this current debate. Two groups of people with the same style of fiscal irresponsibility are debating the details while the rest of us hold our breath and hope our particular hand out is spared. From the bedroom to the board room morals matter, and we may be soon finding out, once again, the hard way.

Global Warming, Christ's Return, and Hot Air…

There are new reports indicating that the computer models used by the UN to predict global climate change are flawed and their projections of warming levels don’t match the actual data. Therein lies the problem caused by  people given to apocalyptic scenarios. When the data doesn’t pan out, as most often happens, the people who predict New York will be under water or that Christ will return next week both do damage to worthy ideas. We should take care of the environment because its God’s creation and we are its stewards responsible to the Maker for our actions yet how many people will be turned off to the idea because of the cranks? You should come to Christ, but there are so many very good reasons to do so beyond trying to cover your options in case the world ends.

Whenever someone sounds the alarm simply ask “What are they getting out of it?” and if you don’t like the answer just walk away.

A chuckle…

KYIV, UKRAINE — Calling themselves “The Monkles” and playing (loud) rock and roll music with an Orthodox Christian message, four Ukrainian monks have made a name for themselves in the annals of Rock ‘n’ Roll oddities.

The plumber has been here…

for just about a minute or so and already he’s muttering under his breath. That’s the sound of expensive. I know, I’ve heard it before.

BTW if you think going to confession is rough try explaining yourself  to a plumber. At least a Priest can grant absolution.

Tattoos and infatuation…

are just not good together. You’ve really got to think before you ink because, you know, people break up and stuff, and things change and when a passing thing gets permanently etched into your body it’s really difficult to remove and more difficult to explain.

A Thought.

Fresh out of seminary I was too ambitious, too driven, too interested in making a name for myself to soothe my own deficits. What I really needed to do was not impress God and others but draw close to both. What difference does the title in front, and the initials in back, of your name mean if there is no real love for God and others?

Just a Note.

Each holy thing we do. Each temptation we face and overcome. Every time we choose the good, the holy, the beautiful, and the righteous is cherished by God. It’s not just our struggles and sins that will matter as we stand before Christ but even the feeblest or unforgotten act of goodness as well.
